A proud part of Shaw Media Inc, ITV was established in 1973 by Edmonton surgeon-turned-businessman, Dr. Charles Allard. An independent station created by individuals with new fresh ideas, ITV signed on in September 1974 with a schedule of bold and progressive programming.
The station changed its name to Global Edmonton in 2001 as Global Television/Canwest welcomed ITV into its national broadcast entity, fulfilling founder Israel Asper's dream of creating a national television network. In 2010. Global Edmonton and the Global Television Network became part of Shaw Media after Canwest was acquired by Shaw Communications.
Today, Global Edmonton continues to dominate as Edmonton's #1 News source leading the market with 43 hours per week of award-winning LOCAL news programming each week. In 2007 Global Edmonton introduced audiences to Global 1 – the city’s first and only television news helicopter! Providing traffic reports for the daily commute and covering the city’s breaking news, Global 1 delivers an aerial perspective to viewers that no other station can provide.
